A comparative study on mental health of college going boys and girls of Nalanda district

Abstract

Mental Health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being of an individual. It is a state of mental well-being that enables person to cope with the normal stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well, work well and contribute to their community. The present study was conducted to measure mental health of college going students (boys and girls). A sample of 400 college students were selected by stratified random sampling method for study. Mental health was measured by mental health inventory by Jagdish and Srivastava (1983). This inventory measures Mental Health of an individual on six dimensions like positive self -evaluation, perception of reality, integration of personality, autonomy and environmental mastery. A statistical tool of Mean, S.D and Z-test was used to analyse the data. Results after analysis of data reveals that there is significant difference between boys and girls on positive self-evaluation, perception of reality, integration of personality, autonomy, where as insignificant difference between two groups on group-oriented attitude and environmental mastery. On overall Mental Health dimension there was no significant difference between boys and girls. This study suggests that there is a need for supportive and enriched academic environment for mental health development of college students.
