Abstract
The universal Public Distribution System (PDS) in Tamil Nadu has played a significant role in ensuring food security to the people. The performance and outreach of PDS of Tamil Nadu in comparison with the country both in the rural and urban areas using the recent rounds of NSSO data is discussed in this paper. The results suggest that the reach of PDS in Tamil Nadu is far better than all India where a targeted system is functional, across all consumption-expenditure classes. The universal PDS model in Tamil Nadu is worthy of emulation by other States, particularly in the context of high levels of malnutrition prevalent in the country.
