Abstract
Demand for milk in the state is continuously growing with increasing income, growing population, rapid urbanization and changes in dietary habits. In this setting, milk procurement and its marketing has largely been depending upon unorganized channels of marketing rather than depending on cooperative marketing channels of milk. The performance of milk procurement co-operatives (Aavin in Tamil Nadu) particularly in milk procurement and its distribution is essential, in order to keep the interest of various stakeholders’ viz., farmers and consumers and dairy co-operatives in particular. Hence, an attempt was made in this study to assess the status of milk procurement by co-operatives (MPCS) and infrastructural availabilities by analyzing the secondary data available. This study would also throw some light on the strengths, weakness, opportunities and challenges (SWOC) faced by MPCS. In order to accomplish that, two response group meetings were organized in the study areas which were attended by the milk pourers of aavin and other officials from different milk unions of aavin. The results of the study revealed an unwelcoming trend of decrease in the procurement of milk by MPCS.
