Abstract
The caste structure in India is exceptionally complex. The Scheduled Castes are characterized by a low, in fact the lowest, social or ritual status in the caste hierarchy, as well as by low socio-economic conditions. Disparities in socio economic status are a great cause for concern today as they are increasing throughout the world. An improvement in the socio-economic conditions of the Scheduled Castes would involuntarily raise their social status. The social and economic status of the most of the castes may undergo change according to changes in their socio-economic conditions. The present study is carried out on different castes among Schedule Caste based on the primary data (household’s survey) at village Karyal Khurd in tehsil Arnia of Jammu district. This village is just four kilometres away from international border in Arnia sector which always remain in news to heavy cross border firing and mortar shelling by Pakistan forces. The educational level is not so good among the people of all the castes of Scheduled Caste. There is marked variation in term of their social and economic status within the castes of scheduled caste. The males are more literate than females. Their traditional occupation has been change now. But their monthly income is also not up to the mark. So as a whole it is observed from the present study that, the socio-economic condition of Scheduled Caste is actually not well and Govt. should give its eye on them for their development and betterment.
