Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the patterns of relationships between mental health status and job satisfaction among male and female civil police personnel. Police personnel (N=350, male=248, female=102) were surveyed in seven district (Varanasi, Mirzapur, Allahabad Lucknow, Sitapur, Barabanki and Bhadohi) in the state of Uttar Pradesh in Republic of India. Participants’ responses were obtained on questionnaires which measured psychological well-being and psychological distress (Heubeck & Neill, 2000) and job satisfaction (Dantzker, 1993). Data were statistically analyzed for examining the hypothesized relationships between the variables among the male and female civil police personnel. Results indicated that age, experience, salary, psychological wellbeing and job satisfaction were significantly different among the male and female civil police personnel. Psychological wellbeing of male participants was significantly, positively correlated and predicted with job satisfaction and psychological distress was significantly, negatively correlated and predicted with job satisfaction of male police personnel only. Psychological wellbeing of female participants was significantly, positively correlated with job satisfaction. Results also showed that age and salary significantly, positively correlated with job satisfaction of male participants and salary of participants significantly, positively predicted job satisfaction. Implication of the finding is that police department should concentrate on removing discrepancies in the job conditions of the male and female police personnel. The police department should also pay attention to reduce, eliminate or modify stress among male police personnel using psychological techniques based on the western model and Indian psychological model, yoga, relaxation and meditational techniques.

Key words: Psychological Wellbeing, Psychological Distress, Job Satisfaction.
